The Cabernet Sauvignon component of our upcoming Dark Red comes from Starlane vineyard which is renowned as the best in the region for Cabernet. Jim Dierberg (a billionaire) who owns the vineyard has said that he wants to be on the cover of wine spectator as the number one rated wine for his Cabernet, and he doesn’t spare any expenses on the farming of this ranch. It is being managed very well, the vines look great, and We scored some of this fruit!!
From their website:
Star Lane Vineyard, located at the far eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, is both the warmest and the highest elevation vineyard in the appellation. Backing up to the lower slopes of the San Rafael Mountains, Star Lane features a unique range of weathered sand, gravel and alluvial cobbles over a clay/loam subsoil. What this means is that it has both excellent drainage and good water holding capacity in the subsoil, and is similar to those of the best properties of Bordeaux. Visually, the vineyard is on the demarcation line where pine trees naturally grow and thus has a different climate than any other area within Santa Barbara County, yet still enjoys the marine influence from the east-west orientation of the Santa Ynez Valley (which makes this place really unique).
