The Syrah component for the Dark Red, as well as all the fruit for the Black Beads comes from the Tierra Alta Vineyard. Tierra Alta is in the cooler part of the Santa Ynez Valley that is called Ballard Canyon. Our fruit came from a steep block of Syrah that is on some serious limestone at the top of the hill. Limestone tends to give the wine an interesting minerality. This vineyard is known best for its Syrah and other winemakers have been making some great (and high scoring) wines from this place. Our wines from Tierra Alta are some of the most concentrated and darkest flavored in the cellar.
Check out this tasting note from another winery in the valley that makes a Tierra Alta Syrah…
With elegance that only angels possess, gliding into the room amidst a potpourri of cherries, blueberries, and pomegranate, she captures your imagination with lavender perfume and obliterates your inhibitions with nuances of nutmeg, sage, and toffee. In a move of selfish spontaneity, you embrace desire and delve into a kiss loaded with all the flavors of passion –strawberries, pomegranate, cassis and cherries. A Sirens song of coffee and cola expose diabolic intentions saturating your soul with lust. An evening of black ties and red dresses becomes a night of stolen moments and necessary sin, compressing the wonders of eternity into one moment.
Wow! Sign me up for some of that.
